Beginning with the 1970 model year, Harley-Davidson used a frame identification number. On many modern models the full VIN is stamped on the right side of the frame on the downtube.

Starting with the 1981 model year, Harley-Davidson motorcycles use the standardized 17-character VIN format. The decoder at the top of this page does the work for you, but understanding the basic structure is useful when identifying a motorcycle or checking paperwork.

HARLEY'S 9-CHARACTER VIN ERA

Harley-Davidson changed its identification system for the 1970 model year. These motorcycles use a shorter Harley-specific number rather than the later 17-character standardized VIN. Factory motorcycles from this era generally carried corresponding identification on the frame and engine.
